  • Man cave

Dads who have everything rarely have a barrel with their name burned into the oak. Fill it with his whisky and it keeps giving for weeks, then sits on the bar for years.

Still deciding?

What are you ageing?

Oak barrels aren't just for whisky. Choose your drink to see how American oak can change its character.

Whisky ageing in a glass head oak barrel

Whisky

Young or blended whisky is where the barrel shines. Oak is what gives whisky most of its colour and flavour in the first place. This just keeps going.

What the oak adds
Vanilla, caramel and toast. Darker colour. A rounder, smoother finish.
How long to leave it
3 litre: 4–6 weeks. 5 litre: 6–8 weeks. 10 litre: 2–3 months. Taste weekly.
What they'll notice
Less burn on the finish, more sweetness up front, and a noticeably deeper amber.
Good starting bottle
A mid-priced blended Scotch or Australian whisky. No need for anything expensive.

Tip

Start tasting after two weeks. Small barrels move quickly, and it's easy to go a week too long. When it tastes good, decant it.

Which size?

Find your perfect size

Smaller barrels age faster because more of the liquid touches wood. Bigger barrels hold more and move more slowly. That's the whole trade-off.

Real wood touches the spirit. No foil or plastic liner.

  3. 18–22mm staves

Solid oak, thick enough to seal well and age evenly.

  4. Medium char inside

The toasted inner wall that gives vanilla, caramel and colour.

  5. Stainless steel tap

    Pour straight from the barrel.

  6. Display stand

Holds it steady on the bar. Included.

Also in the box: barrel wax and a care guide with the curing steps.

Why Booze & Barrels

Engraved to be used, made to be aged.

How it works

Cure, fill, taste.

  1. Cure

Fill with water and let the oak swell until it stops seeping, a day or two, once.

  2. Fill

Whisky, bourbon, rum, port, wine or a batched cocktail. Seal the bung, close the tap.

  3. Taste and enjoy

Sample regularly. When it's right, decant. Oak keeps working until you stop it.

    The details

    Oak, engraving, delivery and returns.

    Why oak?

Oak breathes. Through the grain, a little oxygen reaches the liquid while vanillin, lactones and soft tannins move the other way. The result is more depth and fewer hard edges. Every Booze & Barrels barrel is American white oak with a medium char.

Can I use an oak barrel for rum?

Yes, and it's one of the most rewarding. An unaged white rum will take on colour and body noticeably in a few weeks. Oak's vanilla and caramel character sits naturally alongside the molasses sweetness already in the spirit. A dark rum that's already been wood-aged needs a much lighter touch.
